Ken got up, and walked to the door in stocking-feet. Opening the door revealed Dave Starsky, loaded down with what looked like everything he owned.

Ken took the picture in with a terrible suspicion. They wouldn't. They couldn't. The irony would be tragic.

Starsky smiled and elbowed past him. "It's your lucky day, Choirboy...  I happen t'be your new roomie..." Starsky announced. Wearing a white T-shirt blazoned with the Academy seal and navy-blue sweats, he stood there, surprisingly blue eyes just beaming.

"No," Ken said, blankly. Then, with dawning disbelief, and half an octave lower, he repeated himself. "No."

Murder on San Carmelitas by Lynna Bright was originally published as a stand-alone paper zine in 1986 by April Valentine's Amapola Press. It was one of the most popular and enduring works of fiction available to the fandom in the pre-internet print zine era, and reflects the time in which it was created. Written prior to 1986, the story takes place in 1982, 36 months after Gunther's assassination attempt on Starsky. MoSC creates a fictional island off the coast of California called San Carmelitas owned and populated primarily by gay men. Starsky and Hutch have to go undercover as a gay couple on this island to catch a serial killer.

However, the crime plot wasn't what made MoSC such a significant fannish work. What made this story so important to fans of its era was the way the writer portrayed the depth of the emotional conflict between Starsky and Hutch as their assignment forces these two straight men to have to deal with their conflicting feelings about gays, their role in the undercover, and the change in their relationship since Starsky's shooting.

"This is crazy. We're drunk."

"Not drunk." His partner sighed, eyes warm, accepting Hutch's wondering exploration of his body and face. "Mellow."

Touching him was a lot like stroking a lively puppy, brimming with vitality, vulnerable with trust. And Hutch didn't trust himself, suddenly. The game-like always-had turned serious.

"I-I think something's happened...." Hutch ... came to the rumpled bed and sat down. "I saw some flashes in the sky, Starsk. ... And then the ground...rumbled. The wind came up... I don't know what to think. But something tells me, deep down, that this was it." He looked at his partner. Starsky was taking him seriously. "And L.A.," he went on, feeling the awesome weight of it for the first time, "maybe the whole West Coast might be—" He lay back, raking his fingers through his hair.

Starsky got up then, and ran barefoot and dressed only in his navy-blue longjohns outside. ..."Hutch! C'mere!"

Hutch ran outside. The sun had risen in the east, as it should. But there was an unearthly glow in the west, above the trees. Another sun or the reflection of hell.

Starsky moved close beside him, then, poignantly, turned and slid one arm around him. "Oh, God, Hutch. What— What if it's really true?" He looked up, breathing hard, eyes so blue and wide Hutch could have drowned in them.
